Berberine the Anti-Aging Antioxidant*

What is Berberine?


Berberine, a naturally occurring compound, is commonly found in various plants such as barberry, Oregon grape, tree turmeric, Phellodendron, and Goldenseal.


Both Traditional Chinese Medicine and Indian Traditional Ayurvedic System of Medicine have a rich history of using this amazing compound. It is used for gastrointestinal conditions, and microbial infections. It acts as a powerful antioxidant, and protects cells from the damage caused by free radicals, and includes anti-inflammatory properties.

  • Activates the longevity pathway called AMPK (which is a type of protein), that acts as the metabolism’s “master switch”

These multifaceted benefits position berberine as a highly-effective supplement, contributing to slowing down aging and boosting longevity.


Metformin and Berberine


Widely prescribed for diabetics, Metformin, is derived from the French lilac and controls high blood sugar in type 2 diabetes.


Both berberine and metformin regulate blood sugar levels. Elevated blood sugar can lead to significant harm, affecting nerves, blood vessels, and organs. Blood sugar control is crucial to prevent diabetes-related complications and enhance overall well-being.

Both metformin and berberine have been shown to reduce levels of LDL (the bad cholesterol) from the bloodstream.


In a recent study, Berberine was shown to inhibit the absorption of dietary cholesterol in the small intestine level and to raise HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol). Metformin also shows promise in being able to lower LDL cholesterol levels . Which is mentioned in a study, and concluded: "Our findings suggest potential beneficial effects of metformin in the prevention of cardiovascular disease.”


Berberine vs Metformin - which is better?


Both berberine and metformin effectively regulate blood sugar, aid in weight management, and reduce cholesterol levels. However, their side effects diverge. This makes berberine a potentially better choice for some. Notably, berberine doesn’t require a prescription, while metformin does.

David Sinclair, Ph.D. AO, a professor on aging research at Harvard, (one of my favorite educators) endorses berberine because of its effects on lowering glucose levels in the blood.


What are metformin side effects?


Metformin:

  • Mild side effects compared to other diabetes medications.

  • Minimal strain on internal organs and no weight gain.

  • Common side effects include:

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • Abdominal pain

  • Gas and bloating

  • Lack of appetite

  • Metallic taste in the mouth

  • Some side effects can be eased by taking metformin with meals or using a slow-release form.

  • Rare severe side effects include:

  • Lactic acidosis (discomfort, severe tiredness, shallow or fast breathing, feeling cold, slow heartbeat)

  • Yellowing of skin or eyes (indicating liver issues)

  • Skin rash, itching, or redness

  • Long-term use may cause vitamin B12 deficiency anemia.

  • Regular blood tests are recommended to monitor B12 levels.

Berberine:

  • Generally safe when taken orally (plant extract).

  • Isolated cases of stomach upset, constipation, and diarrhea reported at high doses.

  • Follow recommended dosage.

  • Topical application has no known side effects.

  • Caution if you have low blood pressure; use under medical supervision.
